Halloween in Ukraine. How to properly decorate a store?

Why Halloween

Why Halloween

Halloween originates from the English phrase «All Hallows’ Eve» — «The Evening of All Saints» or «The Evening before All Saints’ Day». The history of the name is ancient: in Middle English, «hallow» meant holy, and «eve» — evening. Over time, the expression evolved into «Hallowe’en», and then into the modern «Halloween». Halloween is also called «Witches’ Night» in Slavic countries, «Night of the Witches» (Slovene: Noč čarovnic, Croatian: Noć vještica) in the Balkans, and «All Souls’ Night» in poetry. Black Friday refers to the days of store sales around Halloween. The holiday is celebrated on November 1, but sales usually start not on the day itself, but already at the beginning of October.

Why decorate your storefront for Halloween

The main goal of any business is to make a profit. Profit depends on the number of customers. Entrepreneurs use holiday window decoration to attract customers’ attention, remind them about their brand, and increase sales. Halloween is an opportunity to boost sales not only on the holiday itself but also in the long term. A well-decorated storefront attracts strong interest from passersby. They take photos near the decorations as if they were in a photo zone and post them on Instagram, Facebook, and other social networks, which in fact is free advertising for the store. If the decorations are truly engaging, photos of your store can reach a wide audience and increase customer flow.

A properly decorated storefront can increase the number of customers and sales by 2–3 times. A poorly designed storefront, on the other hand, can lead to problems and reputational losses.

Halloween conflicts

Halloween conflicts

Sometimes decorations can cause problems. There are few direct lawsuits over Halloween decor, but there have been cases where decorations caused fires, scandals, police involvement, and legal claims. Most often, this happened due to overly realistic decorations that were perceived as real threats, or due to violations of safety standards.

Scandals, police, and court

Unsuccessful or overly realistic decorations have already caused panic and public conflicts.

For example, in 2020 in Texas, USA, artist Steven Novak decorated his house with «murder scene» displays: he poured dozens of liters of fake blood and hung up bags and a chainsaw. Neighbors called the police several times, believing a real crime had occurred. The police did not fine the artist, but the incident gained wide publicity and sparked debates about the limits of «artistic freedom» and public peace.

In the USA and the UK, there were repeated cases of candles and flammable materials used in store displays. In 2014, a pumpkin with a candle caused a fire in Illinois that burned down an entire row of shops. Those responsible were fined.

Sometimes visitors were injured because of decorations. In Berlin in 2021, a visitor tripped over a fog machine in a themed café and injured her knee. The establishment was forced to close the decoration area, and the local press cited this café as an example of non-compliance with safety standards. A similar situation occurred in a shopping center in Prague, where a hanging pumpkin arch fell on two visitors. One suffered a concussion. The incident was investigated as a violation of installation safety standards. Such situations usually end with complaints and lawsuits for medical expense compensation.

In Germany and Canada, some stores were accused of discrimination due to hanging Indian masks and inappropriate mannequin scenes. Owners were not fined, but the decorations were ordered to be removed.

How to avoid unsuccessful decoration?

  • Realism — in moderation. Decorations that look like real crime scenes can cause panic and police involvement.

  • Fire safety. Use LED lighting instead of candles and avoid flammable materials.

  • Safety first. All elements must be securely fastened, and wires should be hidden.

  • No discrimination. Decorations should be festive, not offensive.

Taboo: What is strictly not recommended for Halloween during wartime

Do not exploit the theme of war and death. It can cause pain and emotional distress to people, create negative associations with your store, and lead to reputational damage.

Do not stage scenes of crimes, murders, or accidents. During wartime, scenes of violence are perceived more acutely because they are a real part of Ukrainians’ lives — in their thoughts, in the news, and for some, in their personal experiences. Decorations can be mystical, interesting, and scary, but not violent.

Avoid themes of mutilation and lost limbs — among Halloween decorations, mock-ups of fingers, hands, and legs are sometimes used. Such decorations are inappropriate now.

Tips on how to properly decorate your store for Halloween

How to properly decorate a store for Halloween

  1. Openness. Remove unnecessary partitions so that customers can see the products even before entering the store.

  2. Promotions and discounts. Inform customers about them directly on the storefront — through stickers, signs, and posters.

  3. Price tags. They can also be styled. But remember — a store looks more solid when all price tags are uniform, minimalist, and match the overall interior style.

How to properly decorate a store for Halloween

  1. Color harmony. The holiday theme should not strongly contrast with the store’s design. Decorations should attract attention to the store but not distract from the products.

  2. Lighting. Use accent lighting to highlight key details and products.

  3. Thematic product displays. Combine your products with themed characters to create cohesive stories.

  4. Minimalism. Avoid clutter — too many decorations, especially those unrelated to a composition, create a feeling of chaos and cheapness.

  5. Experimentation. Classic decoration is good, but new ideas and creative details always evoke more emotions, so don’t be afraid to experiment.

  6. Look from the outside. After decorating the storefront, walk by and evaluate whether it catches your eye and stands out from the surrounding landscape and other displays. Step back a certain distance and check how well your decorations stand out from afar.

Don’t forget about the interior space: add festive elements to the sales floor, create gift set islands, and use light decor on mannequins and tables.

What influences the choice of storefront decoration

  • Store location — Imagine that there is a school or kindergarten near your store. You decorated the shop window with terrifyingly realistic decorations, and children passing by are scared, crying, and parents are upset. This is definitely not the effect you expected from a Halloween sale. Therefore, when choosing decorations, it is important to consider the store’s location, the type of people who will pass by, and predict the effect you want to achieve versus the actual reaction you may get, taking into account the demographics of your area.

  • Store assortment — Plush pumpkins would be inappropriate in an electronics store, just as skeletons would be in a children's store. Decorations should match the store’s assortment, complementing rather than contrasting with the products on the shelves.

  • Target audience — Consider the age category of your customers. Fun decorations and fairy-tale characters are suitable for children, realistic or even scary décor for teenagers, and interesting compositions for adults.

How to combine Halloween décor with store products

Traditional decorations for a Halloween storefront

How to combine Halloween décor with store products?

  • Entrance decorations: pumpkins, lanterns, decorative crows, witch hats, brooms, black cats, autumn leaves, vegetables and fruits.

  • Inside the store: cobwebs and candle lanterns, pumpkins, black and white balloons, and diffused lighting.

  • Minimalist option: pumpkin-shaped discount stickers, black bat-shaped flags.

It’s important not only to “attract” customers into the store but also to encourage them to buy something. This works best when the festive décor highlights the store’s assortment.

Décor ideas depending on the store's specialization

Cosmetics and perfumery. You can place decorations with bottles of “potions” and create a witch’s laboratory atmosphere, as if perfumes and creams are witch-brewed elixirs.

Electronics store. Around laptops or smartphones, you can create “cobwebs” with lighting and display festive screensavers on the screens.

Bookstore. Place books with autumn illustrations in the window, including mystical and fantasy stories.

Bookstore

Clothing store. Dress mannequins in black cloaks or witch hats and place pumpkins with discount signs next to them.

Children's stores. Create a separate stand with Halloween costumes and dress the mannequins in them for the storefront. Add autumn-themed toys, pumpkins, and black plush cats. Combine the décor with relevant toys, for example, “Monster High” or “Frankenstein” dolls.

Children's stores

Newborn goods. In stores selling baby products, even on Halloween, tenderness and care remain relevant. Knitted decorations can create a pleasant impression.

Newborn goods

Confectionery or coffee shop. Use decorative pumpkin-shaped cakes, and serve real desserts in festive packaging.

Liquor store. The target audience is adults only. A simple but expressive décor will work well, such as a garland of cans in the window.

Liquor store

Electrical goods. This is a chance to showcase the variety of garlands and lamps in your store. Use multicolored lighting and stock up on Halloween garlands and nightlights: pumpkins, ghosts, cats. Decorate the storefront with them — it signals to customers that if they need interesting themed lights and garlands, they’ll find them here — not only for Halloween.

Plumbing store. This is a store where children rarely come. Therefore, you can be more realistic with decorations. For example, place a sink in the window and make it look like a monster is stuck in the drain, with pipe unclogging products nearby.

Plumbing store

Such combinations not only create a festive atmosphere but also make the product the main star of the storefront.

How to prepare your store for Halloween?

  • Prepare your store for possible power or internet outages. It is very inconvenient when the power goes out during the workday, and even worse when it happens on a sale day with many customers and increased profit potential. Prepare in advance for possible force majeure situations to continue processing sales regardless of electricity or internet availability: install specialized accounting software and equip the store with an autonomous power supply.
