All about price checkers in trading

Basic information about price checkers

When there is a high influx of customers in a store, it can be difficult for sales staff to handle both consulting and sales simultaneously. If the product range is large and there are ongoing promotions and discounts, it becomes challenging to update prices in time and inform customers. To serve customers quickly, always provide accurate product information, and reduce the likelihood of conflict situations, business owners purchase a price checker.

A price checker or micro kiosk is a device that stores all product information. It is placed in the sales area, and customers can use it themselves to get information about a product: its price, specifications, availability of promotions or discounts. For example, if a customer does not find a price tag, they don't need to go to a sales assistant and ask to scan the product at the register — they just hold the item up to the price checker, which scans the barcode and displays the information.

Such micro kiosks are often seen in supermarkets, usually mounted on walls. In large stores, price checkers are installed in each department. They are also used in retail chains, shops, pharmacies, and warehouses. They can be placed on shelves, racks, columns, or mounted on brackets.

What distinguishes price checkers? Micro kiosk comparison

Price checkers can differ in the following characteristics:

  • Types of barcodes it recognizes — linear 1D barcodes, 2D QR codes.

  • Case and display sizes.

  • Display type — touchscreen, LED, LCD, standard, color or monochrome.

  • Mounting and installation type — micro kiosk with or without a stand, desktop price checker, wall-mounted, or portable handheld.

  • Audio and video playback.

  • Built-in memory.

  • Integration with inventory software.

  • Manufacturer and warranty — ideally, the manufacturer provides a warranty of at least 12 months.

  • Price — the cost of a price checker depends on its features. A good micro kiosk with a color display, sufficient built-in memory, support for accounting software, video and audio can cost between UAH 27,000–37,000.

The functionality of a price checker depends on the software installed. It is very convenient to use a micro kiosk with the Torgsoft mobile app, which can be installed on the device. The customer scans the product barcode in the "Product Check" mode and sees its name, photo (if available), and current price.

Price checker with Torgsoft software:

  • Reads one-dimensional barcodes and 2D QR codes.

  • Connects via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, and Ethernet to update data and synchronize multiple micro kiosks in a single network.

  • All product information is loaded directly from the inventory software.
