How to Choose Receipt Paper
After purchasing a product, the customer must be issued a receipt at the checkout. The receipt is printed on receipt paper. The receipt paper roll is inserted into the receipt printer, where information is sent from the computer for printing the customer’s receipt. There are different types of printers, and depending on which receipt printer is used, different types of receipt paper must be selected.
Types of Receipt Paper
Receipt or cash register paper differs by printing type, number of layers, roll width, and inner core diameter.
Printing Type
By printing type, receipt paper can be thermal, capillary, or ink-based.
Thermal Receipt Paper
This type of receipt paper is suitable for thermal receipt printers. During printing, the thermal head of the printer heats the color-forming layer of the thermal paper. The thermal ink activates and turns black. The printed receipt can be touched immediately—ink does not smudge. Thermal paper comes in widths from 40 to 80 mm, with 57.5 mm being the most popular.
Capillary Receipt Paper
This type allows printing two receipts simultaneously: one for the customer, one for the cashier to keep for sales tracking. Such printers have two drums for printing and rewinding the second copy. This paper consists of two layers: the top with micro-ink capsules and the bottom for direct printing. During printing, the capsules burst to reveal text on the top layer, while the bottom receives a direct print.
Ink-Based Receipt Paper
This type is made from offset paper and uses ink for printing. About 5 meters before the end of the roll, a red mark appears to indicate low paper, signaling the cashier that it’s time to replace the roll.
Number of Layers
Receipt paper can be single-ply or two-ply.
- Single-ply paper consists of offset paper with 92–100% whiteness and a density of 60–65 g/m². Its key feature is fast ink absorption to prevent smudging.
- Two-ply paper has an offset paper layer with 55–60 g/m² density and an ink-reactive layer. The top is printed for the customer, the bottom is stored by the seller for long-term sales records.
Roll Width
Receipt paper comes in widths of 37, 40, 44, 57, 69, 76, and 80 mm. Although roll lengths are standard, outer diameters vary. Capillary printers require two-ply rolls with a larger diameter than single-ply rolls.
Inner Core Diameter
To choose the correct size for your printer, consider the inner core diameter—typically 12 to 19 mm. Some printers accept only 12 mm cores, while others support both 12 and 19 mm.
How to Choose Paper by Density
- 48 g/m² – storage up to 1 year; used in kiosks, stores, pharmacies;
- 55–58 g/m² – storage up to 3 years; used in cash registers, ATMs, terminals;
- 70 g/m² – storage up to 5 years; used in banking.
