How to Choose a Label?
Label printers are part of retail equipment used to automate store operations. A label printer prints labels, barcodes, logos, and product markings on label rolls. There are different types of label printers, and each requires a specific type of commercial label.
What is a Commercial Label?
According to Wikipedia, a commercial label is a graphic or text mark applied as a sticker, tag, or coupon on a product, exhibit, or other manufactured item, indicating the brand name, product name, manufacturing date, and expiration date.
What Are the Types of Commercial Labels?
There are two types of commercial labels: thermal and thermal transfer.
Thermal Labels
Thermal labels are made of thermal paper with a heat-sensitive layer. During printing, the printhead heats the layer and darkens the areas where the text should appear. This is a budget-friendly option with a short lifespan—ideal for food products.
The protective sensitive layer on thermal labels varies:
- Eco
- TOP
- TOP semi
Eco Label
This label has no protective layer at all. It is not durable and degrades quickly. It’s a low-cost option used for products with a short shelf life.
TOP Semi Label
This label has one protective layer, making it more durable. Suitable for products with a shelf life of up to 30 days.
TOP Label
This type of label has two protective layers. It doesn’t smudge, fade, or wear under bright light and is moisture-resistant. It’s used for long shelf life products—over 30 days.
Thermal Transfer Labels
These labels are printed with a ribbon on thermal transfer printers. They are durable and resistant to moisture, dirt, tearing, smudging, and fading. Ideal for products with a long shelf life—one year or more.
They are made from glossy, semi-glossy, matte, or semi-matte paper.
What Are the Sizes of Commercial Labels?
Self-adhesive labels come in standard and non-standard sizes.
- Standard: 30x20, 43x25, 58x30, 58x40, and 58x60 mm.
- Non-standard: All other sizes made in limited quantities, used less frequently.
What Types of Adhesive Are Used on Labels?
Self-adhesive labels can have removable, permanent, or reinforced adhesive.
Removable Adhesive
Designed for labels that need to be removed quickly without leaving residue. Easy to apply and remove without damaging the product.
Permanent Adhesive
Used for labels that must stay on the product permanently. Difficult to remove and may leave sticky residue.
Reinforced Adhesive
This adhesive is very strong. Labels stick tightly and can’t be removed without damage. Used for labeling products stored in extreme temperatures from +50 ℃ to -50 ℃.
What to Consider When Choosing a Commercial Label?
Select self-adhesive labels based on:
- Label roll width – should match your printer type, product, and store/warehouse requirements;
- Ribbon width – must match label roll width;
- Ribbon length – depends on printer model: some hold 700-label rolls, others 1000-label rolls or more;
- Roll diameter – must fit your printer’s specifications.
