For product labeling, adhesive labels are commonly used. On clothing, instead of an adhesive label, a textile ribbon label is applied. Textile ribbons vary, and before purchasing one, it’s important to understand which type is compatible with your label printer model.
What is a Textile Ribbon?
A textile ribbon is a material used for labeling fabric products: bedding, towels, pot holders, clothing, blankets, pillows, tents, protective fabric covers, mattresses, seat belts, footwear. The material is presented as a ribbon. A label printer prints information from a computer onto the ribbon: washing modes, ironing instructions, fabric composition, size, manufacturer. The ribbon is then cut into individual tags, which are sewn into the seam of the item.
Types of Textile Ribbons
Textile ribbons come in polyester, nylon, and satin varieties.
- Polyester. Polyester textile ribbon is made of synthetic PET fibers. It is strong, smooth, and pleasant to the touch. Tags made from this ribbon withstand high temperatures up to +100°C and low temperatures down to -10°C, the ink does not wash off and survives dry cleaning.
- Nylon. Nylon textile ribbon is made of nylon. It is a budget-friendly and widely used material. Nylon ribbons are treated with fire-retardant substances: they melt rather than burn in open flames. They feel somewhat like paper. Suitable for labeling fabric items, except for underwear.
- Satin. Satin textile ribbon is made of satin and looks and feels like silk. It is soft and gentle, does not scratch the skin. Used for printing with a label printer or universal printer to label any fabric item. The tag is durable, the ink does not wash out, and it resists smudging or tearing due to temperature changes.
What to Consider When Choosing Textile Ribbon for a Store
Before purchasing textile ribbon and printing information on a fabric tag, you need to know:
- the print type of your printer – textile fabric labels are printed with thermal transfer label printers;
- whether the ribbon in your printer is designed for fabric printing – it must be a ribbon with ink film formulated specifically for textile printing;
- if the durability of the tag matches that of the item – the item should be as resistant to moisture, temperature, and fading as the tag itself;
- how compact the printer is – so that printing tags and labels on textile ribbon does not interfere with the manufacturing process;
- softness and feel – if the tag is for a garment that touches the skin, it should be comfortable and not scratch or press against the body.
