Currency detector

Sorting:

How to Choose a Currency Detector

Currency fraudsters have learned to produce counterfeit banknotes that are visually indistinguishable from real ones. To protect your store from losses due to counterfeit money, a currency detector is used.

What Is a Currency Detector?

According to Wikipedia, a currency detector is a device designed to quickly verify the authenticity of banknotes. It is typically installed at the cashier’s station so that the cashier can immediately verify the bills provided by the customer.

What Types of Currency Detectors Exist?

Portable Currency Detector

This is a budget option suitable for delivery services and couriers. It operates on a rechargeable battery for up to 12 hours, is compact, and easy to carry. It uses ultraviolet light for verification, with an accuracy below 90%. Not intended for high workload environments.

Standard Currency Detector

A standard detector checks bills with 90–92% accuracy. It is suitable for small stores, pharmacies, and kiosks. Equipped with a UV lamp, bills are checked visually under the light — counterfeit bills glow differently and more brightly.

Universal Currency Detector

A universal detector checks the authenticity of banknotes and securities using multiple features: UV light, magnetic detection, watermark presence, and microtext recognition using a magnifying lens. Suitable for large stores, gas stations, and currency exchange offices.

What Detection Methods Are Used?

Currency detectors use infrared (IR), ultraviolet (UV), and magnetic detection methods.

Infrared (IR) Currency Detector

Banknotes contain special IR marks, visible only under infrared light. The ink includes a chemical compound not visible under normal lighting. Under IR radiation, authentic notes reflect the beam, revealing hidden features. This method is gentle on the eyes, works even on worn or dirty bills, and is 99% reliable. Counterfeiters cannot yet fake this effect effectively.

Ultraviolet (UV) Currency Detector

Fluorescent ink on genuine bills glows under UV light. Hairlines should appear on both sides of the note. A counterfeit note may glow entirely in blue — a sign of forgery. Fluorescent marks may fade over time and become invisible. Fake bills often glow on both sides, unlike genuine ones which glow only on the front due to denser paper.

Magnetic Currency Detector

Some inks used on genuine notes contain magnetic properties due to ferromagnetic additives. Magnetic detectors use sensor heads or magnetic visualizers to detect them. These marks are applied to serial numbers, images, and denominations. Counterfeit bills typically lack magnetic components.

How to Choose a Currency Detector?

Choose a detector based on the size of your business, volume of transactions, and required level of verification.

  • For couriers and delivery services, choose a portable UV detector.
  • For small to medium stores, pharmacies, and kiosks, choose a detector with both UV and IR detection.
  • For large stores, banks, and exchange points, choose a universal detector with UV, magnetic, and IR detection.
