How to Choose a Receipt Printer
A receipt printer helps automate store operations. There are different models of receipt printers, and before buying one, it’s important to understand which features to consider.
What Is a Receipt Printer?
A receipt printer is a device designed to print cash register receipts.
What Types of Receipt Printers Exist?
Receipt printers can be thermal, dot-matrix, or inkjet. They differ in print quality, speed, consumables, maintenance, and price.
Thermal Receipt Printer
A thermal receipt printer prints on thermal receipt paper. The top layer of the paper is heat-sensitive. The print head heats up and burns the image onto the paper. Thermal printers provide high-quality printing, and the receipts are resistant to light, moisture, and smudging.
It is not recommended to use a thermal printer in hot environments — such as outdoors in summer or near a restaurant kitchen — as the paper is sensitive to high temperatures, which may affect the printer's performance.
Dot-Matrix Receipt Printer
A dot-matrix receipt printer prints via an ink ribbon. It has a pin that strikes the ribbon, which leaves an imprint on the paper. The printed receipts are resistant to high temperatures and can be used near kitchen areas.
However, dot-matrix receipt printers are noisy, slow, and offer low print quality. They are a budget option, require frequent ribbon replacement, and are not suitable for heavy workloads.
Inkjet Receipt Printer
An inkjet receipt printer works by spraying ink from a cartridge onto the paper, like a regular office printer. The resulting receipt is high quality with sharp, legible text, even in small fonts.
This type of printer requires cartridge replacement and drying time for the ink. The receipts are not moisture-resistant and can smear if they get wet.
What to Consider When Choosing a Receipt Printer?
In addition to the type, consider several key features:
- Compactness. If your checkout area is limited, choose a compact printer that doesn’t take up half the counter.
- Durability. Consider whether the printer can withstand a drop from the table or if it's made of non-impact-resistant material.
- Connectivity. Receipt printers may connect to a computer via USB. Some models also support Bluetooth or WiFi for wireless operation.
- Performance. Printers vary in their daily print capacity. Some can handle up to 1,000 receipts per day, others more than 5,000. Choose a model based on your average daily customer volume.
