Label printer

Sorting:

Label printers are devices for printing labels, stickers, and tags on goods, packages, boxes, and crates. It is used for labeling parcels, finished products in production, for reassessing goods, and other purposes.

Types of label printers

Desktop label printers

  • They are suitable for printing a small number of labels — up to 3-5 thousand per day.

  • They are used in trade and logistics: for labeling goods in stores and small industries, parcels, containers, boxes in warehouses.

Industrial grade label printers

  • Designed for high print volumes — 20 thousand labels per day or more.

  • For marking goods during production and transportation — on production lines of enterprises, in factories, plants, and in logistics.

Printers are divided into thermal and thermal transfer printers by printing type

Direct thermodruk

Direct thermal printing is carried out by applying pinpoint heat to the heat-sensitive layer of thermal paper, causing areas of the paper to darken and form an image. Direct thermal printing is cheaper than thermal transfer printing. The pictures are bright and accurate, but not durable — the image deteriorates from moisture and lightens under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. The shelf life of such images is up to 6 months on average.

Thermal transfer

The image is applied to the carrier material and transferred to the label material by heat pressing. Such images are more detailed and durable — they do not smudge, do not blur due to moisture, even after washing the tag in hot water, and do not fade in the sun. But the price of the technology is higher. Usually, such printers are chosen for label printing when the company has a fairly large volume of printing, or a longer label life is expected — more than 6 months. Thermal transfer printers are also used for labeling parcels, because it is important that the label does not get worn off during transportation.

How to choose a label printer, what to look for?

Choosing a printer depends on your needs and budget

When choosing a label printer, pay attention to the following characteristics:

  1. Consumable size — the printer is designed for ribbon of a certain width and diameter. Usually, this information is indicated in the product description or its specifications. The required tag size depends on its purpose.

  • For example, to label goods on the shelves, a medium-sized sticker of 40 x 25 or 58 x 40 mm will be a convenient option. Such labels have enough space to place all the necessary information about the product and price.

  • For marking goods in production, clothing stores, supermarkets by the piece, such as bags, children's toys, clothes, small 20 x 30 mm tags and also small 40 x 25 mm tags are best suited, the latter are quite versatile in size, so they are the most popular.

  • For Nova Poshta's TTNs and other stickers for parcels, containers, and boxes, large labels of 100 x 101.5 mm are required.

So, depending on what kind of labels you need to print, you can choose a printer with the right consumables.

  1. Printing technology — whether you need images that are resistant to fading and moisture. If you do, it's better to choose thermal transfer printing; if not, you can buy a printer with direct thermal printing.

  2. Printed image type — pay attention to whether the printer prints exactly the images you need: graphics, text, barcodes and QR codes, small print, logos, etc.

  3. Auto-cutter — auto-cutting of receipts significantly speeds up the workflow. This is an important printer parameter for high print volumes. With a small volume, it is not as influential, but it also makes work easier.

  4. Resolution (DPI) — The higher the resolution, the better the image quality of the label. Preferably, the printer should have a DPI of 200 or higher.

  5. Size and design — depending on your location and use, you may find a different printer model to suit your needs:

  • There are printers that are large and small, lightweight enough to be placed on your desk and carried wherever you want. Some printers are so small that they fit in a bag or pocket. Sometimes the manufacturer even provides a wall mount for the printer.

  • Printer design — front paper output is considered the most convenient because

✔️ consumables in such models are more protected from liquid spills and dirt — this is especially important for catering establishments and when placing the printer on a desktop

✔️ such printers can be installed in limited spaces — under the counter, between furniture, on a shelf in a cabinet, and among other equipment

✔️ front paper exit minimizes the risk of paper jams and makes it easy to replace the consumable.

  • Paper Cover Design and Indicators — the transparent paper cover allows you to monitor the status and amount of consumables. It is also convenient when the printer is equipped with sensors for paper crumpling, jams, and paper end-of-life.

  1. Print volumes and print speed — if your company doesn't expect large volumes of labels to be printed per shift, these indicators are the last to be considered. But in the case of intensive printing, this is a very important characteristic. For example, if you need to label parcels for delivery to customers, then high-speed printing will speed up the process of sending goods. Or in production, when you need to label finished products on the line, in warehouses and stores to quickly replace price tags with the latest ones, etc.

  2. Durability is a particularly important indicator if your business has a high volume of printing. Often, manufacturers specify a guaranteed operating life for important printer parts. For example, it is desirable that the abrasion resistance of the print thermal head should be planned for at least 50 km of paper, and the auto-cutter should be designed for 500 thousand cuts.

  3. Connection method — if you want to connect the printer to the Internet, a computer, a cash register or other equipment, be sure to pay attention to the built-in ports of the printer: USB — for a computer and PC, RS232 — for a cash register, RJ11-12 — for a cash drawer and kitchen bell, Ethernet — an Internet port. Also, the printer can be equipped with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technology for wireless connection — usually in portable models.

  4. Printer costs:

  • The price of the printer itself — for label printers, prices start at 2650 UAH. Thermal transfer printers are often more expensive, while direct thermal printers are cheaper.

  • Delivery cost — in Torgsoft, delivery by Nova Poshta in Ukraine is free for purchases from 900 UAH.

  • Consumables — the cost of consumables can also vary depending on the type of paper and printer model. You can find the best option on the website
