What Is a Barcode Scanner?
According to Wikipedia, a barcode scanner is a device that reads barcodes printed on product packaging or other media and sends this information to a computer, cash register, or POS system.
What Types of Barcode Scanners Are There?
Barcode scanners can be wired or wireless, with or without a stand, and use LED scanning, laser, or imaging technology.
Wired Scanner
This is a scanner connected to a computer via USB cable. It does not operate wirelessly. It usually comes with a stand, though it can be purchased separately. The scanner’s working range is limited by the USB cable length.
Wireless Scanner
A wireless scanner can work via radio module or Bluetooth and has a built-in battery, allowing use in the sales area. Its range is about 20 meters with obstructions and up to 100 meters without (see specs). Some scanners can store barcodes in internal memory, while others transmit them directly to the computer in real time.
LED Scanner
An LED scanner reads barcodes from labels, smartphone screens, and monitors. It scans from a distance of 1 to 8 cm.
Laser Scanner
Laser scanners may be single-plane or multi-plane. Single-plane scanners read barcodes in a fixed position, including on bottles or small items. Multi-plane scanners have multiple laser beams and can read barcodes from any angle or surface — candy packs, detergent bottles, pencils, etc.
Imager Scanner
An imager scanner captures the entire barcode like a photo. This technology allows reading barcodes from curved surfaces, damaged or worn labels, and screens — even in low or very bright lighting.
How to Choose a Scanner for Your Store
To choose the right scanner, consider the following:
- Checkout queue – how many customers pass through per day. Choose a scanner based on expected daily load. No need to buy a 5000-scan/day device for only 100 sales/day, and vice versa — low-end models may fail under heavy use.
- Barcode placement – Where barcodes are located affects scanner type. For example, in clothing stores where barcodes are on tags, a laser scanner is enough. For office supplies with various sizes and curved surfaces, an imager scanner is better.
- Supermarket checkouts – In supermarkets, scanners are built into the cashier’s desk as a transparent panel. The cashier moves the item over it and hears the scan beep. These are multi-plane laser scanners, with beams placed at various angles for scanning any barcode — even worn or damaged.
